AmeriCorps/COMCorps Service Members engage in direct service to the community through the coordination of Live Healthy Appalachia’s programs. LHA hosts two AmeriCorps/ComCorps members- a Live Healthy Kids Coordinator and an Adult Education Coordinator. COMCorps is a 10.5 month service commitment, and the service year begins in August 2017. The Live Healthy Kids Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the second-grade Live Healthy Kids program including preparing and distributing food and teaching materials, answering questions from Food Educators, and sending weekly emails with lesson tips and reminders. They will also be responsible for preparing for and teaching additional LHK classes beyond the school-based program, and promoting LHK throughout the community by creating newsletters, attending community events, and planning LHK night. Finally, the COMCorps member will be responsible for coordinating the new LHK Coaches program including recruiting volunteer “coaches”, writing coaching activities, and answering questions related to the program.
The Adult Education Coordinator will work to increase access to wellness programs and healthy living information for adults and families and Athens and Hocking Counties. The COMCorps member will coordinate programs like Cooking Coaches, My First 5K, and wellness programs at social service organizations which educate participants about wellness in a compassionate and straightforward manner, giving them the tools to make lasting changes which will have a positive effect on their health as well as the health of their families.
Live Healthy Appalachia's AmeriCorps VISTA member will engage in indirect service to the community through building capacity for LHA's many programs. LHA hosts two AmeriCorps/ComCorps members- a Live Healthy Kids Coordinator and an Adult Education Coordinator. VISTA service is a 12 month service commitment, and the service year begins on July 3, 2017. For more information and to apply click the above link. The VISTA member at Live Healthy Appalachia (LHA) will support the organization's mission to promote healthy eating and active living through educational programs and community partnerships. Successful candidates will have an interest in healthy eating and active living. LHA's sub-site VISTA will work to increase the capacity of healthy living programs in Athens County and surrounding areas in Southeast Ohio. The VISTA will focus on the following goals during the service year: Develop new volunteer engagement opportunities around healthy eating and active living, focusing on underserved populations; recruit, train, and support volunteers for LHA programs such as Live Healthy Kids and Cooking Coaches; help build organizational capacity through grant writing, donor development, and implementation of a strategic plan; and finalize and implement a branding and marketing strategy that will allow more people to engage with LHA's healthy eating and active living programs.
